At Barton House, we understand the importance of providing activities that offer comfort, emotional connection, and a sense of purpose to the residents. One of the regular features of our care approach is doll therapy—a gentle, meaningful activity that has become a valued part of daily life for many of the residents, particularly those living with dementia.
Doll therapy is not a new concept at Barton House. It’s something we incorporate regularly, offering comfort, reducing anxiety, and providing a soothing sense of familiarity. Many of the residents find peace in holding or caring for a doll, as it often stirs warm memories of parenthood and past experiences. These moments can bring about feelings of calm, happiness, and even improved mood and engagement.
Beyond the physical comfort, doll therapy offers emotional benefits, helping residents feel needed and giving them a renewed sense of responsibility and purpose. This boost in self-worth can have a positive effect on energy levels and day-to-day mood, creating a ripple effect of well-being across our home.
As with all our activities at Barton House, doll therapy is approached with care and sensitivity. Dolls are introduced gradually and respectfully, always in a way that makes the residents feel safe and at ease. Our care team is trained to gently encourage participation, allowing each resident to explore the activity in their own time and on their own terms.
Rachel, Manager at Barton House, explains:
“Doll therapy continues to support emotional well-being and offers another meaningful way for residents to connect, reminisce, and relax. At Barton House, every activity is chosen with care, aiming to enrich the residents’ lives in a way that feels personal, respectful, and genuinely comforting.”
